Who We Are

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.  Information about ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, can be found on the website, as well as research studies.

The ALS Association - DC/MD/VA Chapter was founded in 1991 by a group of dedicated volunteers to respond to the critical needs of people with ALS, and to give support to the family and friends who care for ALS patients. It is the primary resource for patient services in DC, Maryland and Virginia.

ALS Association advocates with government at all levels to draw awareness and resources to the people affected by ALS; tries to effect real change in the way the government responds to the needs of the ALS community.  ALS continually raises awareness about ALS and the search for a cure.

All services are offered free of charge and are funded through donations and fund raising events. The Chapter is a participating organization in the Combined Federal Campaign through its association with Community Health Charities.

Goals: To offer programs and support to ALS patients and their families. To provide community education and stimulate public awareness about ALS. To raise funds for local patient services and for national research into the causes and cures.
