Who We Are
Diabetes Management, Low Vision Services and Retina Associates are working together to help meet the needs of people in our community with diabetes.
If you have diabetes mellitus, your body does not use and store sugar properly. High blood-sugar levels can damage blood vessels in the retina, the nerve layer at the back of the eye that senses light and help to send images to the brain. The damage to retinal vessels is referred to as diabetic retinopathy.
The purpose of the screening is to determine if a more thorough examination by an ophthalmologist is recommended. Persons with diabetes should schedule a dilated examination at least once a year. More frequent medical examinations may be necessary after the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy.
Free screenings for persons with diabetes who have not had a recent dilated retinal exam. Appointment required. Call 540-536-5130 to schedule. First Thursday in January, April, July and November, 8-9 a.m. You will need someone to drive you home after having your eyes dilated.
