Who We Are

The Mary and Charles Oshinsky Apartment Program (OAP) was developed in 1985.  OAP currently serves residents with developmental disabilities.  Secondary and tertiary disabilities include cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, autism, seizure disorder, muscular dystrophy, head injury and dual diagnosis (developmental disability and mental illness). Ages of residents range from the early '20s through late '60s.  Some residents have valid driver's licenses. Nearly all others access public transportation independently. Two-thirds of the OAP residents are competitively employed; several participate in supported employment or regular volunteer work and several are currently unemployed.

The residents do not appear to need the structure and supervision offered by a group home, but who benefit from assistance in the development and enhancement of independent living skills to facilitate living safely and successfully in the community. Residents generally receive drop-in counseling from once every other week to four times per week.

OAP residents live with a peer roommate or by themselves. Some of the apartments are for OAP residents who are married. Some are owned by the resident or resident's family while others are rented or leased.
