Who We Are

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with cognitive delay, developmental disabilities, or intellectual disabilities.  Participation in sports gives the athletics continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.  Special Olympics Virginia, Northern Virginia is known as Area 26 and is accredited by Special Olympics Virginia.

Sports include Alpine skiing, aquatics, basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country skiing, cycling, ice skating, golf, gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer, sailing, softball, tennis, track, and field.

All prospective athletes must register to participate in Special Olympics. There is no cost to participate in Special Olympics. The Special Olympics and registration procedures may be viewed online.
