At Prince William County Community Services (PWCCS), Horticultural Therapy (HT) is a psychosocial rehabilitation program based upon horticultural therapy principles intended to support adults with psychiatric and cognitive disabilities move forward in their recovery. Transportation to and from the program is available to individuals residing in PWCCS residential programs.
Horticultural Therapy teaches skills, enhances self-esteem and creativity, increases socialization and provide sensory stimulation. In addition, individuals who are considering returning to work, volunteering, or attending school have an opportunity to learn the skills necessary for their success. Using the therapy, individuals can hone job skills such as arriving on time, working with a supervisor, accepting and giving feedback and quality control and timeliness. These skills can be applied to any work or school situation or to horticultural pursuits.
Activities include:
- Vegetable, flower and herb gardening;
- Greenhouse and indoor plant care;
- Flower arranging and horticultural crafts;
- Vegetable harvest and preparation.
