Who We Are
NAMI-VA is the State affiliate of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. NAMI Virginia's ongoing advocacy work builds support for public policies to protect and improve mental health services, increase access to mental health services in the public and private sectors, and support effective recovery services for adults and children/adolescents with mental illness. NAMI Virginia was selected as an Outreach Partner for the National Institute of Mental Health's (NIMH) Outreach Partnership Program. The Program enlists national and state organizations in partnerships to help bridge the gap between research and clinical practice by:
- Disseminating the latest scientific findings;
- Informing the public about mental disorders, alcoholism, and drug addiction;
- Reducing the stigma and discrimination associated with these illnesses.
The Program strives to increase public awareness about the importance of basic and clinical research in improving treatments for mental illnesses and addiction disorders through advancing knowledge about the brain and behavior.
