Who We Are
Volunteer with Bridges to Independence. The volunteer program is critical to fulfilling the organization's mission and provides the residents with necessary services. Bridges is committed to offering you a rewarding and fun volunteer opportunity. There are volunteer opportunities for individuals and for groups. Some of the opportunities to volunteer are:
Adopt-A-Family Sponsorship: If you and/or your organization want to establish an ongoing supportive relationship with a family working to make a better life for themselves, partnering with AACH's Adopt-a-Family Program can provide you with an opportunity to do so. A volunteer commitment of no less than 6 months is required.
Food Programs: You could coordinate a group to provide a potluck dinner to the shelter residents. To help, all you have to do is cook your favorite dish and drop it off at the shelter. By teaming up with other volunteers you'll help to provide a great meal for the people at Sullivan House. You can also help by sponsoring a food drive where you work, in your neighborhood, or at your church. Finally, you can donate super market gift certificates that clients can use to buy their own food. (This is especially needed during Thanksgiving and Christmas.)
House Manager/Office Aide: This is an excellent way for new volunteers to begin, especially if you have limited experience volunteering, or if you want to find out more about what it takes to operate a shelter. Assistance is needed on weekdays, evenings and weekends. Major responsibilities include answering telephones, taking messages, directing calls to staff and clients, assisting with donations, light office work, greeting the general public, and more. On the weekends you can even operate the shelter for a couple of hours on your own. Scheduling is flexible and training takes ONLY an hour.
Moving and In-Kind Donation Help: A few times per month someone moves out of the Sullivan House. The majority of these individuals move to a house or an apartment within a 10-mile radius of the shelter. You can assist us in helping these clients move. Normally these moves take place during the evening or on the weekends.
Tutors: Volunteer tutors work with clients one-to-one teaching a variety of skills; GED, computer skills, etc. These volunteer opportunities happen on an as needed basis. Schedules are flexible, depending upon when you can help us out.
